Cauffee Espresso Bar and Bakery in Au Gres

If you ascribe to the motto, “Instant Human, Just Add Coffee,” then the Cauffee Espresso Bar and Bakery in Au Gres will be a treat for you on your meanderings along the Lake Huron “Sunrise Side” of Michigan.

Located at 121 W. Huron Street, just off US 23, it is located between Standish, and East Tawas, about 20 minutes from the Standish exit off I-75 for travelers headed north.

It was opened by former congresswoman Lynn Rivers in an A and W, and the interior was nicely redone, featuring a welcoming counter area and a bright, open seating area, as well as outdoor seating when weather permits.

It is worth the stop.

We stopped on the way home from a special “sneak-peek” stay at the Sweetwater Sea Bed and Breakfast in Greenbush, which will be opening in spring of 2023. Be sure to start your summer bookings now (the views from the living room onto Lake Huron are incredible).

The brewed coffee is from Roos Roast, the quirky, delectable roaster in Ann Arbor and is fresh and flavorful. They have the usual assortment of espresso bar drinks- cappuccino, latte, and the family favorite of a Chai Latte. All the beverages we had were satisfying and the home baked desserts were delicious.

The Monster Cookie-a melange of oatmeal, m and m’s and peanuts; and a Pecan Bar, were too quote the great Mary Berry, “scrummy!”

I really loved the chalk board wall, and the basket of chalk that allows visitors to leave a message or some art work to share with the other guests. Kids and kids at heart will enjoy it and it is this sort of small detail that makes the Cauffee Espresso Bar and Bakery in Au Gres a worthwhile stop-creativity, community and coffee- how truly Michigan!
