Sleepy Dog Books- Mt. Pleasant, Michigan

The wait is over. And it was worth it.

It has been years since Mt. Pleasant, Michigan had its own independent book store, and now with the opening of Sleepy Dog Books located at 120 E. Broadway in the heart of downtown Mt. Pleasant, a 10 minute walk from campus, Michigan book lovers and readers have cause to celebrate.

Sadly, there are many towns throughout this country that are devoid of a quality independent bookstore, so you might be thinking-so what’s the big deal?

Well, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan is a college town and that makes the absence of a bookstore a bit more soul-crushing. It is often thought that the best part of one’s education occurs outside the classroom walls, whether it is in a diner at 1 in the morning discussing Nietzsche or string theory, or hearing a talented underground musician creating a new musical idiom right before your eyes, college towns at their best help create a culture. A culture that contributes to the vibrancy and community and gives purpose and meaning to our human experience.

Sleepy Dog Books- Mt. Pleasant, Michigan: A welcoming entrance way with bookshelves greeting visitors.

I had the pleasure of meeting Riley, one of the owners of Sleepy Dog Books on their opening weekend in early May. Like all lovers of reading and individuals dedicated to a great purpose he has passion and a commitment to not only being a successful entrepreneur, but to be an indelible part of the fabric of the community. For them, Sleepy Dog Books is:

A simple idea with endless possibilities, formed as a touchpoint for a community and as a catalyst for passion, thinking, and the collective good.

The store has the bright blonde wood flooring and well lit interior of a contemporary bookstore, yet with a timeless feel as one walks into the sturdy brick building and marvels at the book lined walls. It is not large, but has a very well-curated book collection, covering both best sellers and books from smaller, independent imprints, and a well-promoted collection of books from Michigan authors.

The children’s section, in a smaller room off the main area is a lovely nook that families with younger children will enjoy cozying in for a bit to read a classic Seuss or one of the picture books from other contemporary artists.

With artist events, a wonderful browsing experience, family story times, a knowledgeable staff and welcoming environment book lovers throughout Michigan and the midwest should make Sleepy Dog Books in Mt. Pleasant a destination books store.

The timeless quote from Helene Hanff comes to mind, “Standing there, staring at the long shelves crammed with books, I felt myself relax and was suddenly at peace” from 84 Charing Cross Road.

Yes.

Peace.
